World’s first 5 second import – 2JZ Supra

Did we ever doubt that a 2JZ powered vehicle would be the first in the 5 second 1/4 mile club? No we didn’t!

Although this may be old news to some, I held off posting EKanoo Racing Supra’s 5 second 1/4 mile run as these guys were breaking records left right and centre. An amazing effort by the EKanoo team and another great drive job by Gary White.

Best E.T – 5.97 @ 387kph (240mph)
Best trap speed – 6.00 @ 394kph (245mph)

In addition they also ran a 6.65@356KM/H (221MPH) in the Toyota 86 with the 2JZ combo, making it the world’s fastest 86 down the 1/4 mile.

Also I’m glad Khalid Mohammed’s recovered and walked away uninjured after this nasty crash in the Twin Turbo Lexus ISF.

 

Cooma 1000m Sprint 2014

November 22nd of 2014 was the 3rd running of the Snowy Mountains 1000m event – http://snowymountains1000.com.au/.

This event is to see who is the fastest (and has the highest top speed) from a standing start over a 1000m (1km) airport runway in an regional Australian town (Cooma, NSW – close to 1000m altitude). No race fuels, no nitrous, and only on street radial tyres.

This year the event was even better for my car, no ignition or major boost issues, I had a tune on e85 with some adjusted cam tuning, new tyres and the new turbo setup. More details on my build can be found HERE.

2JZGarage – Supra 2JZGTE VVTi Project Update

Well it’s been a while since I’ve posted up any info on my own supra. Unfortunately the supra and this website sometimes become lowest on the list of life’s priorities, but that doesn’t mean I’m still working on the supra – A man must have his hobbies!

Current power;

  • Tuned on pump 98 fuel with a result of 445rwkw (597rwhp) @ 23.5 psi
  • Tuned on pump e85 with a result of 482rwkw (646rwhp) @ 23.5 psi

Since the last update these are the major changes;

  • Titan 272 VVTi Camshafts, GSC Valve stems, GSC beehive springs and titanium retainers – hopefully a write up coming soon on installing these
  • New LS2 LQ9 coil setup, which you can see HERE
  • Swapped out the old Garrett T51R SPL BB with a new Garrett GTX 4088R turbo with 1.06 rear. This was primarily to make it more streetable with the current engine setup staying stock for a while
  • Exhaust camshaft timing adjustments and slight vvti intake cam adjustment made by my tuner – this dramatically improved mid-range with the turbo by around 40hp – Exhaust cam tuning was 2 degrees of retard from memory
  • TRD Seibon hood removed and stock hood put back on to try and improve bonnet lift while racing at high speeds – although I still managed to brake another shroud at around 270kph (167mph)
  • Flex fuel sensor installed, although wiring yet to be setup and tuning to be complete
  • Tial BOV and other exhaust fabrication work for new turbo
  • Driveshaft shop single piece drive shaft, B series diff, Solid diff bushings to reduce axle tramp
  • Powersteering cooler setup in RHD duct
  • TRD sway bars and new links
  • New clamps for FMIC, fittings and ducting
  • Probably a few other things here and there that I’ve forgot about

Next in line will be cleaning up a few things I’m not 100% happy with at the moment such as improving intake temps. I will be installing twin thermo fans due to radiator setup and high speed racing causing shrouds to break – this will require some further intake fabrication work. Would like to create a custom airbox, install a fabricated oil catch can, changing to a new boost solenoid to allow for launch control/boost by gear and fix up some wiring.

New GTX4088R turbo got installed, managed to tap out a boost fitting and have a local shop do some fabrication work

The Titan 272 VVTi Camshafts, GSC Valve stems, GSC beehive springs and titanium retainers getting installed, I will be putting lots more pictures up and explaining this process in the near future

Toyota Supra NA-TT Conversion – Removal of Stock Parts – Part 2

So you’ve made it to this stage then you are ready to start pulling out the 2JZGE, make sure you have ample space in yours or someone else’s garage or workshop to work.

Ensure you reference the workshop manual for the process of removing all of the parts, and that you label them and keep all bolts/nuts together.

Begin by draining and safely deposing of all of the fluids from the engine such as;

  • Oil – Plug on bottom of sump and oil filter under intake plenum
  • Coolant – Plug under radiator, engine plug also at rear behind exhaust manifold
  • Power steering fluid – Remove any hose under reservoir
  • Transmission fluid *Optional if V160/V161 – Although recommended changing while you’re there

Remove all of the following;

  • Hood/bonnet
  • Battery, tray and clamps (Remove the battery ground leads always before working on any car)
  • Any wiring sensors/plugs you can reach
  • Igniter / Fuse box connectors
  • Intake system
  • Top and bottom radiator hose and overflow hose
  • Radiator, clutch fan and Fan shroud
  • Drive belt (Accessories belt)
  • Exhaust heat shield
  • Exhaust system
  • Front bumper assembly/plastic under-guards
  • Heater hoses
  • Charcoal canister and hoses
  • Throttle Cable
  • Power steering lines (On reservoir and steering rack)
  • Fuel line from fuel filter union bolt
  • Return fuel line
  • Clutch pressure line to slave cylinder
  • Ground wires that go to transmission/fuel filter
  • Grounds wire at the back of engine (To firewall)
  • A/C compressor lines *Optional – I didn’t remove these, I was tight on budget at the time, but if you do remove the lines please remove as per workshop manual. I would do this as it makes it easier than keeping hoses connected and working around the compressor!
  • Shifter assembly
  • ECU wiring/loom pulled out through firewall
  • Drive Shaft
  • Rear transmission support
  • Engine mount bolts

Toyota Supra NA-TT Conversion – Summary – Part 1

This article is a guide and summary of the work involved in swapping from a JDM 1998 Toyota Supra SZR to an RZ. Basically all steps involved in removing the 2JZGE and putting in a 2JZGTE VVTi, otherwise known as the NA-TT swap. For those that aren’t aware, the SZR came with the A02B torsen diff, 6 speed V161 and carbon fibre steering wheel, with my car it had only done around 50,000km (31,000miles) and was in great condition. At the time I did not have the budget for an RZ supra at my age and income, I came across a cheap 2JZGTE VVTi engine and thought this was the best opportunity to move to a TT, so I gave the conversion a go way back in 2006!
